Why Most Hackathons Produce Nothing

A hackathon can generate enormous short-term energy while creating almost no long-term ecosystem value.

That does not mean hackathons are ineffective. It means the event itself is not the outcome.

Academic research on hackathons shows that they can support networking, team dynamics, skill development, and motivation, but also highlights the need for further work on what those experiences produce beyond the event.

Exposure
developers discover a technology.
Experimentation
teams build something quickly.
Validation
developers discover whether an idea works.
Continuation
teams continue building after the event.

Most programs measure the first two.

The fourth is usually where the real ecosystem value appears.

A strong registration number can hide a weak program. If participants leave without:

  • funding
  • community access
  • recognition
